CPT® 2023 Anticipated Code Changes
Several changes will be made to the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) 2023 code set that will affect diagnostic services and procedures, effective January 1, 2023. Of interest is percutaneous arteriovenous fistula creation. Two new codes will be available for percutaneous or endovascular approaches for creating arteriovenous anastomoses. Currently, there are only codes to describe this procedure via an open approach.
These new codes will allow reporting of less invasive approaches using endovascular methods, such as magnet or mechanical capture, to assess the vein and artery targeted for the procedure. The endovascular approach may also require the use of balloons or coils to direct blood flow, and/or different imaging methods to guide the procedure.
