A procedure to help alleviate the complications of portal hypertension is called Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS). After accessing the internal jugular vein percutaneously, a stent is routed into the hepatic vein and through the liver tissue into the portal vein. This creates a shunt or bypass and re-routes the blood flow in the liver.
