FY 2021 ICD-10-CM Diagnosis Code Updates Released
The FY 2021 ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes have been released and are available on the CMS 2021 ICD-10-CM page and CDC ICD-10-CM page. These FY 2021 ICD-10-CM codes are to be used for discharges effective October 1, 2020 through September 30, 2021. The updates include FY 2021 official guidelines, alphabetic index tables and addenda, tabular list and addenda, and Present on Admission (POA) code list table. Of interest, the update summary includes:
- Total ICD-10-CM codes
- 490 code additions
- 47 code revisions
- 58 code deletions
- Deletion of N18.3: Chronic kidney disease, stage 3 (moderate) with expansion of new substages
- N18.30 – Chronic kidney disease, stage 3 unspecified
- N18.31 – Chronic kidney disease, stage 3a
- N18.32 – Chronic kidney disease, stage 3b
- New Chapter 22: Codes for Special Purposes (U00-U85)
- U07.0 – Vaping-related disorder
- U07.1 – COVID-19
- Continuation of converting excludes1 notes to excludes2 notes (Official Coding Guidelines for Coding and Reporting Section I., A., 12). One example:
- I70.2XX – Atherosclerosis of native arteries of the legs with ulceration now include both critical and chronic ischemia of native arteries with ulceration
