New Collaboration Opens CPT® Content for Developers

In a press release by the American Medical Association (AMA), the AMA is now joining forces with Health Level Seven® International (HL7®) to provide technology developers with increased accessibility to AMA-published medical codes and descriptors. HL7® is a American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited standards development organization dedicated to providing a comprehensive framework and related standards for the exchange, integration, sharing and retrieval of electronic health information (EHR) for entities within the healthcare industry.

This agreement, building on more than a decade of cooperation between the AMA and HL7®, will work to advance both organizations’ mutual goal of promoting the effective exchange of health information through the integration of HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®) with the AMA’s CPT® code set. “By working toward greater CPT accessibility for developers, the collaboration between AMA and HL7 allows the use of CPT in the development and testing of FHIR-based technology to further advance the next generation of health information solutions,” said AMA Executive Vice President and CEO James Madara, M.D.
