FY 2023 ICD-10-PCS Code Updates Released
The ICD-10 Procedural Coding System (ICD-10-PCS) codes and updates for fiscal year (FY) 2023 have been released, and are available on the 2023 ICD-10-PCS Home Page of the CMS website. These codes are to be used for discharges occurring from October 1, 2022, through September 30, 2023. The update files include official coding and reporting guidelines, code tables, index, definitions addenda and conversion table.
New guidelines include B3.19 (Detachment procedures of the extremities), which provides detailed instructions regarding the reporting of complete and partial amputation of the extremities by including a table for the qualifiers. Revised guidelines include B4.1c (Procedure on Tubular Body Parts) and B6.1a (General Coding of Device). Guideline B4.1c further specifies when a vascular procedure is performed on a continuous section of artery or vein, the body part value for the most proximal (closest to the heart) area should be used. Guideline B6.1a further clarifies how to report the insertion and removal of a device when the intent of the device is to remain in the patient after the procedure; however, there are situations in which the device needs to be removed due to inadequate size or documented complication. In these situations , the coder would report the insertion and removal of the device.
The update summary includes a total of 78,496 codes, the greatest number of which is located in the Medical and Surgical Section. The total number of codes includes the addition of 331 new codes, no title revisions and deletion of 64 codes.
