CMS delays Kidney Care Choices (KCC) payment model

CMS is delaying the start date of the first year for its Kidney Care Choices (KCC) payment model until January 1, 2022. The first performance year was to begin April 1, 2021. CMS stated it is extending the model’s implementation period to allow participants more time “to prepare to take on financial and population health accountability starting in January 2022.”

The five-year Kidney Care Choices model builds on the Comprehensive End Stage Renal Disease Care Model structure. It adds financial incentives through four payment options to encourage better care management for Medicare patients with late stage chronic kidney disease and ERSD, with the goal being to delay the onset of dialysis and incentivize kidney transplants. These voluntary payment options include:

  • CMS Kidney Care First (KCF) Option;
  • Comprehensive Kidney Care Contracting (CKCC) Graduated Option;
  • Comprehensive Kidney Care Contracting (CKCC) Professional Option; and
  • Comprehensive Kidney Care Contracting (CKCC) Global Option.
