CMS finalizes End Stage Renal Disease (ERSD) Treatment Choices (ETC) Model (CMS-5527-F)

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) announced it has finalized the End Stage Renal Disease (ERSD) Treatment Choices (ETC) Model to improve or maintain the quality of care for beneficiaries with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This model will affect approximately 30 percent of kidney care providers with an estimated savings of $23 million over 5 ½ years. The ETC Model will be implemented on January 1, 2021.

The ETC Model will adjust payments from traditional fee-for-service to provider incentive whereby home dialysis and kidney transplants would be supported.  According to CMS, this value based payment model will encourage providers to build their home dialysis programs, which would in turn, allow patients to choose the therapy that fits best with their lifestyles.
